TUPY’s Environmental Management System (SGA) monitors atmospheric emissions and the air quality, the underground waters, the noise levels and the separation and final destination of residues. Those indicators allow for the company to search for the continuous improvement and the permanent development of actions in order to reduce the use of natural resources and to eliminate or minimize the impact of its productive activities on the environment.
From the introduction of the SGA, in 2000, the company has already invested more than R$ 100 million in construction, equipment and process improvement at its industrial plants in Joinville and Mauá. Among the improvements implemented are the new exhaust systems and the furnace controls which catch particulate materials by means of sleeve filters that have an efficiency index between 90 and 98%. Effluents and residue have also received a lot of attention from the company. New treatment stations were designed and built during that period and the company’s own landfill in Joinville has been totally readapted according to the most rigid environmental requirements.
The State of Santa Catarina Environmental Foundation (FATMA), the government institution responsible for the enforcement, license emission and follow up of the improvements obtained by TUPY’s SGA, acknowledged the improvements in 2005, with the “Prêmio Fritz Müller” award, a recognition that was repeated in 2007, when TUPY was again the recipient of the same award. In 2007, the company was also awarded the Prêmio Expressão de Ecologia (Ecology Expression Award).
